Codex skills for video and images

Updated 2026-11-06

Codex reads skills from a .agents/skills folder in your project or in your home folder, and you call one by typing $ and its name, or let Codex pick it from its description. Our free video and image skills are plain SKILL.md folders, so they work in Codex: we ran one in the Codex CLI for this page.

Real: Codex CLI 0.158.0 found the skill in .agents/skills, read its SKILL.md, wrote the settings and ran its script. 6 seconds at 1920x1080, rendered locally with HyperFrames. Nothing retouched.

Where Codex looks for skills

In one project.agents/skills (and in parent folders up to the repo root)
For all your projects~/.agents/skills
How to use oneType $ and the skill's name, or /skills to pick one. Codex also chooses a skill on its own when your request matches its description.
PlansOpenAI says Codex is included in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise, and it also works with an API key.

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file: a short header with its name and description, then instructions, and any scripts it needs. It's an open format, published at agentskills.io, so the same folder can work in several agents. Our guide to what agent skills are explains it in full.

  • Codex comes with two skills of its own: $skill-creator writes a new skill, and $skill-installer installs curated ones.
  • Only name and description are documented as SKILL.md fields. Codex's own extras go in an optional agents/openai.yaml file, such as turning off automatic use.
  • The list of skills Codex keeps in mind is capped at about 2% of its context, so a very long description can push others out.
  • Older guides say ~/.codex/skills. OpenAI's page now names ~/.agents/skills. Codex's source still reads the old folder for backward compatibility, but the docs don't promise it.

One skill, three agents: what differs

AgentFoldersCall it with
Claude Code.claude/skills, ~/.claude/skills/name
Codex.agents/skills, ~/.agents/skills$name or /skills
Cursor.agents/skills, .cursor/skills, and Claude Code's and Codex's folders/name

Only name and description are read by all three, and the standard says name must match the folder's name. Extra fields one agent knows are ignored by the others.

Install a free video skill in Codex

Here with Kinetic Type Title, which turns a line of text into an animated title video. It renders on your computer with HyperFrames, so it needs Node.js 22 or later and FFmpeg, and it has no cost per video.

mkdir -p ~/.agents/skills
curl -L -o kinetic-type-title.zip https://glidezo.com/media/skills/free/kinetic-type-title-v2.zip
unzip kinetic-type-title.zip -d ~/.agents/skills

Then start a new Codex session and ask for what the skill makes, for example "make a title video that says Ideas that move". Every free skill is also on GitHub, so you can clone the repo instead.

What we tested in Codex

We installed our free Kinetic Type Title skill in a project's .agents/skills folder and asked the Codex CLI (version 0.158.0, on a ChatGPT plan) for a title video that says "Made in Codex", without naming the skill. Codex found it, read its SKILL.md, wrote the settings file and ran the skill's script. The whole task took just under 2 minutes, and the video above is the file it made, not retouched. One run, on Linux: we haven't tested every skill in Codex.

What these skills can't do

  • The free downloads make video and images with code: titles, captions, charts, promos, cards. They don't make realistic AI footage or photos.
  • Our AI skills, such as Virtual Staging and Product in Scene Ad, run on this site for credits and don't download yet.
  • They need Node.js and FFmpeg on your computer, and the first render downloads HyperFrames' own browser.

To write your own, our free video skill creator makes a valid SKILL.md from a short form. For other agents: Claude Code skills and Cursor skills.

Questions

Where do Codex skills go?
In a .agents/skills folder: in your project (Codex also looks in parent folders up to the repo root) or in ~/.agents/skills for all your projects. Each skill is its own folder with a SKILL.md inside.
How do I use a skill in Codex?
Type $ and the skill's name, or /skills to choose from a list. Codex can also use a skill without being asked when your request matches the skill's description.
Are Codex skills the same as Claude Code skills?
The SKILL.md format is the same open standard, so one skill folder can work in both. The folders differ: Codex reads .agents/skills, and Claude Code's docs list .claude/skills. Keep to the name and description fields if you want one file to work everywhere.
Do these skills cost anything in Codex?
Our free skills render on your computer with HyperFrames, so there is no charge per video from us or from an AI model. Codex itself uses your ChatGPT plan or API key, as for any other task.
Can Codex make AI video, like Seedance or Kling clips?
Not from our downloads: the free ones make video and images with code. Our AI skills run on this site for credits, with the price shown first. A Codex skill could call a video model's API with your own key, but none of our downloads do that yet.
