Wan 2.5 is a video model from Alibaba’s Wan team, and the first big step away from the open Wan 2.2: it adds sound, but you can only reach it through an API.

Wan 2.5 free: the honest answer

It isn’t free. Unlike Wan 2.2, there are no open weights to run on your own GPU, so every route is a hosted API that charges by the second or by the video.

How to use it

Alibaba Cloud Model Studio is the official route, with the model ids such as wan2.5-t2v-preview. Its API reference has curl examples. We have no Alibaba Cloud key, so we have not run them and this page has no code of its own.

Wan 2.5 or Wan 2.2?

  • Pick Wan 2.5 if you want sound from the model and don’t want to run a GPU.
  • Pick Wan 2.2 if you need to download the weights, run it yourself.

Alibaba has also released newer versions since: its API reference covers Wan 2.6, and Sume’s catalog lists Wan 3.0.

Questions

Is Wan 2.5 open source?
No. On November 1, 2026 the Wan-AI organization on Hugging Face listed weights for Wan 2.1 and 2.2 and none for Wan 2.5. Some sites call it open source but only host the API. Wan 2.2 is the version you can download.
Is Wan 2.5 free?
No. There are no weights to run yourself, so you need a hosted API, and Alibaba lists no free quota for it. A 5 s 720p clip costs $0.50 on Alibaba. If you want a free Wan, Wan 2.2's weights are free to download, and you pay only for your own GPU.
How much does Wan 2.5 cost?
Alibaba, fal, Replicate and WaveSpeedAI all list the same per-second price: $0.05 / s at 480p, $0.10 / s at 720p and $0.15 / s at 1080p. kie.ai lists from $0.30 / video.
What can Wan 2.5 do?
On Alibaba Cloud it makes clips of 5 or 10 seconds at 480p, 720p or 1080p. It generates sound by default, or takes your own audio file.
When did Wan 2.5 come out?
A third-party history of the Wan releases gives September 24, 2025 for Wan 2.5-Preview. Alibaba's API still names it as a preview: wan2.5-t2v-preview.
Can I call Wan 2.5 through Sume?
No. Sume's catalog had no Wan 2.5 when we read it on November 1, 2026. It lists Wan 3.0 and the Wan 2.2 speech-to-video model.
